Grandma Rabb's Old Fashioned Stickies
When I was a little girl I would go visit Mawmaw & Pawpaw Rabb in Shelby, NC in the summertime. I remember her cooking every meal from scratch which included everything from biscuits & gravy to these scrumptious "stickies"....that was what she called them. Unfortunately when she passed away in 2003 she didn't have any recipes hand written so I found this recipe online that comes pretty darn close to those delectable pieces of heaven that I remember when I was a little kid. Since I didn't have a picture of the stickies I thought it would only be respectful to post a picture of my Grandmother, Pauline Rabb.
Dough:
1 cup self-rising flour
1/4 teaspoon baking powder
1/8 teaspoon baking soda
1/2 teaspoon salt
1 teaspoon shortening
1/3 cup milk
Filling:
1/2 stick butter, melted
1 cup granulated sugar or brown sugar
Dough:
1 cup self-rising flour
1/4 teaspoon baking powder
1/8 teaspoon baking soda
1/2 teaspoon salt
1 teaspoon shortening
1/3 cup milk
Filling:
1/2 stick butter, melted
1 cup granulated sugar or brown sugar
- Preheat oven to 400 degrees and grease two pie pans.
- Mix flour, baking powder, soda, salt, shortening and milk together.
- Roll dough out very thin in a rectangle shape with roller and add extra flour if necessary.
- Spread melted butter over dough, sprinkle with sugar.
- Roll up like a jelly roll, then slice the dough into 1" thick slices. (Don't worry the melted butter may start to spill out)
- Place cut rolls face up in a greased pie pan.
- Brush additional melted butter (2 tablespoons) to outside and tops of rolls so they brown evenly.
- Bake for 20 minutes or until golden brown.
Grandma Rabb made the best stickies ever!
ReplyDeleteMy mama also put vanilla flavoring on hers. Along with sugar butter . delicious smells so good
DeleteThank you for this. This is the closest thing I have found to my grandmother's recipe'. I know it was written down, and I have it, along with a ton of other icing, cake, pastry types. I'm a single man and I can't cook worth a flip so I haven't looked for them. If I cooked them, they would just be rocks. My grandmother's family, and my grandfather's were from Kannapolis NC, so they are really close to your families area, and it may be the same recipe that your family used. If I find it, I will share it. Her family was the Ivesters, and the Owings by the way.
ReplyDeleteThanks C B III. I hope you will try then and let me know what you think. Thanks for checking out my blog.
DeleteHi all. I am SO glad you guys remember these things. My grandmother in Lincolnton, NC used to make them and I have never been able to find evidence of them online. She made hers with brown sugar - and I even remember "stickie pie". Sometimes she would bake these in a pie shell and make a pie. Either way - they were heaven. Would love to have you all come and join me online. I celebrate the South on Facebook and on a blog. www.facebook.com/bethyarbroughsouthernvoice and www.bethyarbroughdesigns.com

ReplyDeleteI grew up in Maiden, NC and I have not been able to find anything online regarding the recipe for Butter Stickies. They were honest to goodness the best thing I've ever tasted and I wish I had my mamaw here more than anything to teach me how to make them but I'm excited and getting ready to try this recipe right now!
ReplyDeleteI grew up in Maiden as well. Mom would make stickies all the time. Now after reading all of the post, i must give it a try!
DeleteMy grandmother was from Shelby, NC. She made molasses stickies. We all may be cousins!
ReplyDeleteI bake stickies for my husbands family a recipe from his great great grandmother Burke Co. NC. The recipe is similar with a few difference.
ReplyDeleteSame dough, but butter is softened not melted spread on dough, 6 handfuls of sugar is sprinkled over butter. Then vanilla is flicked from a spoon on to the sugar evenly. Roll and cut in 3/4inch slice and place in a prepare pie crust. Bake about 15min. It cuts and served like a pie. Dj

ReplyDeleteI’m from Casar( Cleveland county) , hubby is from Lincolnton. His grandma made something like this and I have been looking for it for years for him!!! Only difference is his grandma Myrtle didn’t roll hers, she pinched them up into little “pockets” of dough. I wonder if there would be much difference in cooking time ??
ReplyDeleteMy grandmother made these with left over pie crust she rolled out! I have her recipe somewhere but can't find it! BTW I'm from Shuffletown!
ReplyDeleteRoll out your biscuit dough. cover with butter or margarine so you can't see the dough. then cover with white sugar until you can't see the butter then sprinkle with cinnamon. then roll up into log and cut into pieces. put cut side up on greased pan or nonstick foil and bake like a biscuit- probably at 350. Stickies is all we ever called them. Only got when grandma had extra biscuit dough.
ReplyDeleteGreenwood County, SC here and this is exactly how my grandmother made hers. I never heard them called anything but stickies either. I'm 67 years old and I still long for Grandma's stickies. I will definitely get my wife to try this recipe. Thanks so much.
Deletefrom Stanly County
ReplyDeleteFrom concord, my momma made pinched ones and the roll. . No official recipes anywhere, I'm glad we all know what they are
ReplyDeleteMy granny made these, they were delicious!! But at the end, she poured what I think was milk over them. Anybody heard of this?
DeleteMy grandmother poured milk over hers as well. I just wish I had her written recipe.
DeleteThey are really good with a little condensed milk poured on top, but I cut back some on the sugar when adding the condensed milk.
DeleteI'm in and from New York. My mother-in-law used to make these out of left over pie crust. I'm sure her mother used to make them too. I do too except I make extra pie crust. We make ours with white sugar and cinnamon over the butter. I guess this is the northern version. I'll try brown sugar next time.
ReplyDeleteYork,SC here and I remember my grandma and my great aunt making these on their woodstove. The butter they used was their own churned butter. Nothing better than an old fashioned sticky. I will try this recipe! Thank you
ReplyDeletethis sounds like my mother's recipe except when she made them she would also make a gravy from caramelized sugar and milk...YUMMY! Union Co. NC
ReplyDeleteThink I found the recipe with the milk poured over at end!!!
DeleteCan you share your recipe with me as my grandma made them also with milk I'm pretty sure.

ReplyDeleteMy Grandma made Stickie Pie and everybody loved it. But I don't think any of her grandchildren have the recipe. Thank you for sharing. By the way, she lived in Union county.
ReplyDeleteMine lived in Union County too, Waxhaw, NC. And she made the best!
DeleteMy Grandmother Collins made them and they were wonderful. She didn't add cinnamon just butter and sugar. Shape in a jelly roll, put in a dish and add a water sugar and vanilla mixture to them until they floated. Bake at 350 and enjoy.
ReplyDeleteShe and my Grandfather raised 8 children during the depression and she said there was no money and this recipe was a special treat for everyone.
I live in their someplace in Inman South Carolina. My wife carries on the Stickies Tradition.
I'm from Newton, NC and my best friend/neighbor's mom baked these. She swore I could telepathically know when she was baking them because I would show up at their door every time!
ReplyDeleteMy mom made them with butter and cinnamon sugar. Before she baked them she poured a concoction of milk and cinnamon sugar over the top THEN baked them. Makes it's own sauce!❤❤
